Joint Center

For most people, arthritis is inevitable as you age. Every joint in your body is susceptible: knees, hips, shoulders, elbows, ankles, wrists, fingers, and back.

Arthritis is a slow, degenerative process. Over time, the cartilage within your joints, which cushions and lubricates the joints to facilitate movement, wears down. As this occurs, the bones begin to rub together, causing friction and pain within the joint. The pain makes it harder to do everyday tasks, from walking and climbing stairs, to reaching overhead and grasping items.

At Regenerative Orthopaedics & Spine Institute (ROSI), board-certified orthopedic surgeon Dr. Philip Ploska specializes in treating joint problems such as osteoarthritis. He understands that you probably want to put off joint replacement surgery for as long as possible, and there are treatment options that can alleviate your pain.

Dr. Ploska may first recommend cortisone injections, regenerative PRP therapy, physical therapy, prescription anti-inflammatories, or viscosupplementation injections for knee arthritis.

PRP Therapy

Platelet-rich plasma therapy, or PRP therapy, is a cutting-edge procedure that is gaining rapid acceptance as a nonsurgical alternative to osteoarthritis of the hip, knee, shoulder, and spine. PRP therapy uses components of your own blood cells to stimulate the natural healing process.

For arthritis, PRP therapy has the most potential when used early in the degenerative process, before the damage progresses and the condition becomes irreversible.

PRP therapy may delay the need for joint replacement surgery. It may also be used as a treatment for people who are not candidates for surgery.

PRP therapy is also effective for a number of orthopedic injuries that occur within joints, such as rotator cuff injuries in the shoulder, anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries in the knee, tennis elbow, and golfer’s elbow.

Joint Replacement Surgery

When conservative treatments no longer provide pain relief and surgery becomes necessary, Dr. Ploska is one of the leading joint replacement surgeons in Stockbridge and Griffin, Georgia. He performs:

Unicompartmental Knee Replacement

Another surgical procedure we offer for arthritis relief on the knee compartments, replacing damaged parts of the knee. For patients that have limited arthritis and are seeking a quicker recovery.

Shoulder Resurfacing

An alternative to total shoulder replacement is shoulder resurfacing, which preserves more the patients native bone structure, it may be used for patients who are young and have active lifestyles.

Shoulder Replacement Surgery

Common symptoms for patient with shoulder arthritis is pain and loss of motion. Pain usually occurs during activities involving patient to reach over the head. Loss of motion for patients can feel like the bones are grinding on one another. Other patients may be asymptomatic.

Treatment for shoulder arthritis can be as simple as lifestyle changes, medications or injections. Treatment for shoulder fracture include immobilization with sling, icing and pain medications; small percentage may need surgery.

In shoulder replacement surgery the ends of the damaged upper arm bone (humerus) and usually the shoulder bone (scapula) are replaced or capped with artificial surfaces lined with plastic or metal and plastic. Shoulder joint components may be held in place with cement.

This procedure can relieve pain with the added benefits of restoring motion strength, function and assisting patients in returning to their active lifestyle.

Don’t wait until your arthritis pain starts limiting your lifestyle.
